Thousands have shown their support to end mental health discrimination.  When will you?

SRCF and Cares of Life organised a two-day training course on supporting people with mental health problems for representatives of refugee communities.

The course aimed at increasing awareness of mental health in order to tackle discrimination and stigma, while giving precious information on how to recognise and understand depression, anxiety and psychoses. Participants were then instructed on how to provide first aid support to help people in a situation of mental distress.

Anxiety, Stress and Self-confidence
 Workshop

SRCF organised a workshop in partnership with Southwark and Lambeth Primary Care Trust aiming at providing refugees with creative ways to cope with the stress and anxiety caused by adapting to living in a foreign country and a new culture.

In order to find solutions to manage difficult situations, the workshop used a new interactive and creative approach allowing participants to engage with each other in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

As women are particularly exposed to stress because of the change in family dynamics that are implied, SRCF encouraged the participation of women to the workshop.

SRCF in partnership with Southwark Council Primary Care Trust, Cares of Life, Southwark Somali Refugee Council and Southwark Psychological Therapies Service celebrated the World Mental Health Day as an initiative to fight stigma and prejudice at Peckham Library on 30 October 2010.

Members of the refugee community and the general public took part in relaxation sessions and received tips about dealing with stress issues.

The day represented an opportunity for families and individuals to come together in a serene environment and learn about the relevant services provided in Southwark.

The celebration ended with a performance by the SRCF member Tradicion Andina & Anata, engaging the public in folkloric Bolivian dances.
